Proton and ion acceleration in ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions is a very active research field with strong European contributions. With its high acceleration gradients, producing multi-MeV particles on micrometer lengths, the underlying processes are considered a key technology for future accelerators at all energy scales.Since 2012, I3M has participated in the setup of the first laser-proton experiments in Spain, in collaboration with other research institutes as well as private companies. We have developed and tested several kinds of particle detectors for the spectral characterisation of protons and ions. Two series of proton acceleration experiments have been successfully accomplished with a 3 TW, 50 fs table-top laser. During 2017-2018, our aim is to achieve higher proton energies at increased laser power and to optimise the laser target design in order to fully exploit the 10 Hz repetition rate of the source for practical applications of this technique.

In parallel, since 2016 our group at I3M has been developing our own high power infrared laser prototype based on the Thin-Disk Laser (TDL) technology. The main benefit of this kind of Diode-Pumped Solid State Laser (DPSSL) is its very good thermal performance due to the thin disk geometry and longitudinal multi-pass pumping scheme which allows for a compact and much more energy and power scalable laser system for both pulsed and continuos-wave operation. We aim at two main application objectives with such laser system: as a high-pulse energy pumping laser for a bigger Ti:Sa laser system, and at the low energy and high repetition rate regime as a laser excitation for novel opto-acoustic imaging techniques also being investigated at I3M.

Projects

Investigation, development and validation of a system which generates radiopharmaceuticals by laser acceleration”, Retos 2015 program, ref. RTC-2015-3278-1. This project focusses on the development of laser targets suitable for laser acceleration at high repetition rate (up to 100 Hz), the generation of proton beams up to 10 MeV, and the generation of medical radioisotopes (like C-11) in a secondary target. It is carried out in collaboration with Proton Laser Applications S.L., Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and the National Center for Microelectronics (CNM, Barcelona).
